How about we combine the two RSS readers (in the obvious way - a reader that sits in your clock bar, opens when you click it, and takes up the whole screen when the computer is idle)?

Read it. It's not very long, read under "extending" etc and see if you like the other ideas there.

Should Kivo be a YC Download? I think it should.

I just had an epiphany. Why don't we combine YC Projects into one site where they can all be organised and sorted out and stuff, rather than hiding them in the forum?

  12. Re: YC Downloads

I don't believe YC Projects deserves its own site, that would be overkill (in the extreme).

Also, I think (like Mau said) we should use dowloads.youngcoders.com for YC downloads. There is no need for a separate domain (like the wiki, which I don't think needs a separate domain). I really don't like the idea of making YC downloads a completely different site, it just doesn't make logical sense, IMO.

Also, why don't we just use our current hosting to host these files? If it gets out of hand, we can always upgrade.

Anyway, thats just my 2 cents.

@haydenbech: A ringtone is too far...much too far. Screensavers and GFX is great.

I could do the programming, gfx, build the site, and all of my downloads (HUGE RESOURCE Database; progs, software, code, gfx, PSCS+ tuts, tuts + more)

A ring tone is a little too far. I like my phone to ring, not tell me to browse the net. (no offense)

  24. Re: YC Downloads

Hosting will most likely go through downloads.youngcoders.com or youngcoders.com/downloads.

I need to figure out the best way to do this before we set this up. We can't give everyone FTP access to the server and I'm not sure how many people are going to be uploading stuff.

So, give me a bit to think this through and figure out the best plan of action. For the next few days I don't think hosting is absolutely critical. If you want to share something right away, you can upload to our site via vBulletin for the time being (or continue using whatever hosting you are right now). Once we get this formalized, we can move to a more offical method.

I really like this idea and I hope that such enthusiasm continues -- it's great! I spent a good chunk of time the other day writing up some ideas for the network in 2007 and one item on the list was creating such things -- wallpapers, window manager themes, audio and so forth. I, for one, think it would be pretty neat to have a theme song. :)

  27. Re: YC Downloads

    @unclekyky: good points, all true.
I always thought of young coders downloads as a sub domain.
I'm okay with whatever the current host is, as long as the project team (me and whoever else joins) can access it.

@NaRzy: I disagree. EDIT:most people at YC seems to want a ring tone (although we don't have a good on yet). Your help is not necessary, and I think it should be a team effort rather than Lazarus Enterprises taking all the work and credit. And we don't want a DB full of already existing programs, they will all be things designed and made for and by young coders members.

    EDIT(sorry, hadn't read page 5):
it seems that some people would like a rigntone etc and some don't. I think we will start with mau's idea (theme song), and if it works we will make a ring tone that sounds like the song, and some will use it, others wont.

@mau: Yes, we don't really need hosting right now come to think. I think I prefer the subdomain (dld.yc.com) rather than subfolder (yc.com/dnld), because of arguments I saw in the recent "www or not" debate (subdomain represents service - downloads is our service)
I am working on a document that will have most of all the organisation and hopefully I will build on it over the weekend and next week (if only I had done that with my assignments, now I may have to take a few days away from YC to complete them cos I spend too much time here :))
It will have goals etc, then I will need 2 do a timeline etc.

  30. YC Downloads Timeline Document

This is the YC Downloads Project Time line Document, I will be updating this continually, check back every few days, I'll make some changes every day then upload them at the end of the day. In the future I will make a PDF file.
Tell me what you think so far:
