Are you referring to the YoungCoders XML API, "Open Platform"?
If so, here is my summary:
Open Platform is an interface that allows you to interacte with the backend of YoungCoders using XML requests, for use in websites and applications, (for example, for YC Tools). There are plans to make the API much more useful, but there are already many uses (imagination being the only boundary). For any API that is pretty it. It interfaces you with the application you are usings API.

I am currently working with an API for an analytics application. The API allows me to extract the data it has collected as well as manage the users it has.

They allow you to build/expand tools without actually modifying the core product.
