    Best book to learn java

    Hello everybody,
I am absolute beginner to java, have no knowledge about it. Though I have cleared many basic concepts of C and C++ which everybody told me to. Now, I would like to learn java from the very beginning to a very advanced level.
Pleas tell me which book can I refer, or a series of book that I can look upon to learn java evvectively. I live in India, so if you know of some book by Indian authour or which is widely available in India, your answer would be much appriciated.
As I told you above, I have no previous knowledge about java, but still I would like to learn it from beginning to advanced. I would like to learn from the very beginning like choosing the compiler for java and writing your first java program to GUI (Graphical User Interfrace).

Sorry if it's pretty long and if I sound crazy but I would appritiate your help.

Thanks for your help in advanced.

hi there Chetan, if you want to learn java efficiently i would tell you not to refer indian authors. One author who has seriously helped me in java as well as C/C++ is Herbert Schildt. You can find his book on java for SE6 COMPLETE REFERENCE or BEGINNER's GUIDE. i am using the complete reference and it really provides me enough help.

    Regards,
    Abhishek

Again I must agree and say not to get an indian book on the language. No racism intended but the quality of books from europe and the U.S is just far above anything i've read from india.

HOWEVER: I understand you may be nervous about your level of English. In my honest opinion, your english is fine, but if you wanted a simple book to help you which uses clear consise examples then I'd recommend head first java

Head First Java, Second Edition - O'Reilly Media

If you can get past the god awful cover, this book is excellent. Plenty of simple examples and clean english to explain it.

    Enjoy
