Cool Background Effect. How to?

I'd be grateful to you if anyone can please tell me how do we create a background effect like this one

On GIMP I know that the main idea is to use a path to make a curved selection and then use a semi-transparent gradient over it. I'm sure it can be done on Photoshop also. By making many such selections and then using gradients over them, you should (don't trust me, I don't know ABC of graphics) get a similar effect.

The pen tool.

That's pretty much it..
1. Fill in your background with whatever color/gradient you want

2.Draw some curvies with the pen tool

3. Play around with layer effect, opacity gradients, etc!


obviously this doesn't look very good.. but this is just an example of what you can do :)
